Call to Prayer
As I write this article, thousands of United Methodists from all over the world are gathered in Portland, Oregon for the 2016 General Conference. General Conference comprises the United Methodist Church’s top legislative body and it meets once every four years. The Conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs. The 2016 General Conference is meeting May 10 – 20, 2016 to do the work of the United Methodist Church. 800 delegates are gathered from all over the world, with more than 40% of the delegates from other countries. As United Methodists, we truly are part of a global movement to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
There is much to be in prayer about these next days as conversations take place and decisions are made that affect the future of our denomination. To quote from an old saying, “We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future.” Let us pray to our God, the only One who knows our future – and let us lift up General Conference with our prayers. Holy God, guide the work of General Conference and reveal your will and your way in all things, we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
